The Perkins 2000 Series is a proven family of twelve litre, six cylinder, in-line heavy duty engines which set the standards of performance for diesels in the industrial and construction market.
Perkins cares about the environment and works closely with legislative bodies to make sure the diesel engine is in harmony with environmental needs.
The new generation of Perkins 2000 Series engines produce very low levels of Nox, HC and CO as well as particulate matter and will meet all current and anticipated world-wide legislation for off-highway machines into the first part of the 21st Century.
The latest additions to the Perkins 2000 Series provide a family of engines complying with world-wide stage 1 off-highway emissions control regulations.  A range of air-to-water charge cooled engines (12 TW), is designed to offer a compact installation in off-highway equipment requiring power up to 261 kW, whilst a range of air-to-air charge cooled engines (12TA) provides an efficient solution for equipment designers requiring higher powers.  Both types of engine comply with Stage 1 off-highway emissions legislation, and the air-to-air charge cooled versions offer the capability of complying with Stage 2 of the legislation when this comes into force.
Offering a range of power ratings from 201 to 298 kW (270-400 bhp), the 2000 Series is ideal for a wide variety of mobile and stationary applications.
Based upon two litre per cylinder experience and innovative developments, the quiet, clean Perkins 2000 Series six-cylinder range is ideal, providing a highly competitive benefits package.   Perkins' world leading diesel technology and traditional engineering excellence has permitted the development of a range of premium quality engines, combining performance with efficiency and reliability in a compact, low weight package.

Engine Features

  • Gear Train - Forged from steel and hardened for wear resistance, the helically cut timing gears provide a quiet, precise drive system for the engine oil pump, camshaft and fuel injection pump.  The gear train also provides a power take-off facility on the right-hand side of the timing case.

  • Fuel Injection Pump - Gear driven from the engine timing case, the 2000 Series uses the latest Bosch in-line fuel pump to achieve compliance with the latest emissions legislation.  Providing precisely metered fuel delivery, very close to top dead centre, the pump operates at extremely high injection pressures to balance the demands of flexible power, fuel efficiency and low emissions.  Governing is provided by an all-speed mechanical Bosch RQV-K governor, which incorporates a "K-Cam" torque control device to allow tailoring of the engine torque curve to suit different applications and duty cycles.

  • Lubrication System - All engines feature oil spray cooled pistons.  The engine oil galleries are an integral part of the cylinder block, cutting the complexity of the engine and reducing the possibility of leaks.  Two spin-on full-flow oil filters are used for easier serviceability and a separate centrifuge filtration system is fitted as standard on emissions compliant models.  The centrifuge removes particles from the oil which are too fine for the main filters, so permitting the extension of oil-drain intervals to 600 hours, reducing engine downtime and servicing costs.

  • Cylinder Block - Cast in high grade iron, the Perkins 2000 Series cylinder block features an integral deep-skirted crankcase for extra strength and rigidity.  The result is increased engine life, rigid crankshaft support, reduced weight and noise and a clean, leak-free engine.  All cylinder blocks are individually pressure tested prior to engine assembly.

  • Turbocharger - All charge cooled versions of the 2000 Series engines are fitted with watergated turbochargers to maximise power output and improve engine response.  The wastegate allows the use of a higher output compressor within the turbocharger, providing greater low speed boost, simultaneously increasing maximum torque and decreasing smoke.

  • Cylinder Heads - Every engine uses two cylinder heads, each covering three cylinders.  The heads are cast in the same high grade iron as the cylinder block to ensure strength and the same rate of thermal expansion to limit distortion; similarly, the cylinder heads are designed for good heat transfer from critical areas near the combustion chambers, such as valve bridges and injector bosses, to ensure high durability.  Each head includes chemically hardened cast iron valve guides and heat resistant valve seat inserts for improved reliability.

  • Liners and Pistons - Perkins 2000 Series uses "wet" cylinder liners of spun cast iron, 8mm thick, for high rigidity.  These are SiC (silicon carbide) impregnated and surface honed for rapid bedding in and excellent oil control over a long working life.  To ensure leak free sealing, three tough Viton seals are used at the bottom of each liner, with a precise metal-to-metal fit at the top.  The low expansion pistons are cast in aluminum allow with a cast iron top ring carrier to ensure reliable and durable operation.  The low friction, three-ring pack is matched to the surface characteristics of the liner for efficient gas sealing and effective oil control to enhance running efficiency.
