Beacon (Coast Guard) Signal
Commonly referred to as the Coast Guard system,
because it is based on series of differential towers established by
the U.S. Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers, the Beacon signal
transmits correctional signals in the MW band (300 khz). Although the
Coast Guard system does not require a subscription fee, coverage has
previously been limited to areas near ocean coasts, inland lakes and
major waterways. Since it is a tower-based signal, distance and
geography from the towers also affect accuracy.
The Coast Guard is, however, in the process of
erecting additional towers across the U.S. that will increase the
coverage area in the future.
L-Band (Global) Satellite Signal
Offering the broadest range of coverage, the global
satellite system is a commercial system that covers most of North
America, Australia, South America and other areas of the world.
However, because it is a private system, the
satellite system does require a subscription fee. Yearly subscription
renewal is handled by the provider.
On the plus side, though, the satellite network and
correctional signal is the most reliable and accurate system offered.
The satellite system is also less affected by weather and normal
terrain interference that land-based radio beacons.
